Several artists at Am I Collective were asked to create illustrations inspired by our home continent.

Featuring work by Clinton Campbell, Miné Jonker, Jean de Wet, Ruan Vermeulen, Rudi de Wet, Emma Cook, Kronk, Jagabomb, Elise Wessels and Sindiso Nyoni.

Director Robert Nichols made a viral video for the launch, with music by DJ Remy Gold.

    We created a series of patterns for Johannesburg based industrial design studio RAW. These illustrations form part of their ikonik range and are applied to the surface of their wood lockers.

    We created a series of three infographics for Condé Nast Traveller, revealing the stats behind the scenes of a pool boy, cocktail waitress and housekeeper at their respective hotels in Beverly Hills, Las Vegas and Chicago.

    We created an illustrated cover for British Airways inflight magazine, Highlife SA. The illustration was themed on things to see in Mozambique's capital Maputo. We also did a series of drop caps which were used for the accompanying article

    We worked with Fuel Design to create posters for the Wavescape Film Festival and Art Board Exhibition 2012.

    In addition we customised a surfboard which was auctioned in New York, with proceeds going to the Hoops for Hopes organisation.

    We hand illustrated this retro bike frame, taking inspiration from African patterns. The custom build was done by the guys at Woodstock Cycleworks in Cape Town.

    We worked with online clothing retailer Stylemology to create a series of designs and illustrations for Brenham, their motorcycle-inspired menswear brand. Below are a series of logo variations and t-shirt illustrations. This range was loosely inspired by a retro-styled journey through mexico.

  • Nando's
    We worked with Black River FC in Johannesburg to create a booklet for Nando's Peri-Peri Chicken Restaurants. The idea behind the illustrations was to create a series of evolving scenes portrayed around a cuckoo clock. The scenes played with the notion that life was too fast and one should slow down to have an appetiser at a Nando's restaurant. The booklets were supplied to the various chains and contained a CD with more details on the new campaign.

    Work for various editorial pieces in issue 35 of Brownbook, a magazine focussing on lifestyle and culture in the Middle East. We created an icon set and map for an article on an Adventure Water Park and two illustrations for an article on entrepreneurs.

    We were asked by Greenhouse to create a series of characters, each representing a stereotypical music genre. The idea was for these characters to be in agony as they would only hear R'nB on Heart FM. We also created a wallpaper to suit each character, with icons that reinforced the genre. The artworks were used as billboards and decals for taxis.

    Joburg Liaison commissioned us to create a portrait of Nelson Mandela in an African barber shop style.

    The magazine was published to co-inside with Madiba's birthday and the inside spread mapped his life journey in South Africa.

    We worked with Openco in Johannesburg to create a typography-based illustration for Muv-U, a South African community driven, music and style platform. Our illustration traces the origins of Kwaito, a unique local music genre.

    The posters were printed A1 with a spot varnish to give a sheen to the 'gold' colour.

    We took part in an exhibition curated by Durban-based 'Working Class'.


    Artists from South Africa's three main cities, Durban, Johannesburg and Cape Town were asked to create an illustration that speaks about the place they call home. Each group was given a a two colour palette to work with and the posters were silkscreened in a limited edition of 30, with 10 made available for the shows in each city.
